Stand-up paddle boarding was always something I had wanted to try, and (thankfully!) it was easier than I thought it would be! The board was large enough to support my weight quickly, and the long paddle worked my core. We started by paddling around Thompson Cove, and I was amazed by the clarity of the water. Even though the spots were quite profound, I could see every grain of sand in the water. Though our paddle board excursion stuck around Thompson Cove and Smith’s Reef, we saw paddle boarders enjoying the reefs all over the island.

Castaway (5BR) is set beachfront on Thompson Cove.

Thompson Cove and Smith’s Reef are located along the North Shore of Providenciales (Provo) in Turks and Caicos. Smith’s Reef is part of one of the world’s most extensive coral reef systems. The reef and its creatures are a huge draw for divers, fishermen, glow worm tours, and snorkelers. Provo is practically surrounded by coral reefs, teeming with colorful coral and fish.

The whole area is simply beautiful. Even though I was enraptured by all of the sea life, the show stars were sea turtles.

After paddle boarding for nearly an hour, our host remarked how surprised he was that we had not seen any turtles yet. Just then, out of nowhere, I started seeing more than a dozen sea turtles swimming just below my paddleboard. It was one of those transcending moments that practically made my whole trip. The fact that the turtles appeared just 15 minutes before we were set to head back made it even more special.

What I really liked about paddle boarding was the perspective that it granted. Gliding forward over the sea while looking down through crystal clear water was a very empowering feeling. I am happy to say that everyone in our group had a fantastic time, though one did have a bit of trouble with a balance towards the end of our trip.

Note: If the stand-up paddle boarding seems too much, try glass-bottom kayaks!
