The Turks and Caicos Islands are a series of small coral atolls that are located off the southeast coast of the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic/Haiti). While it is directly north of Cuba, this many-sided island group has never shared a border with the nation. Instead, it is located about halfway between the Bahamas and Jamaica, and it is surrounded by miles upon miles of crystal clear ocean water.
When most people come to the beautiful island of Providenciales in the greater Turks and Caicos Islands, they are ready for spending time exploring everything there is to do on the islands, from walking on white sand beaches to dining on some of the freshest seafood available anywhere. There is just as much fun to be had in the water as there is on land here, and it’s a big part of what drives the tourists to visit this tropical oasis year over year.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are home to many of the most beautiful coral reefs in the entire Caribbean, after all, it does form part of the largest barrier reef system in the western hemisphere. Most of these reefs are located offshore, so you’ll have to get yourself there. The best method to do this is through a boat dive.
The Coral Gardens, Thompson Cove, Shaw’s Reef and Smith’s Reef are the most popular spots for diving (and picnicking) in Turks and Caicos -you can snorkel here without the need of a boat (tour). Smith’s Reef These reefs are considered world-class by divers as they boast some of the most diverse coral formations. Many of the corals here are close to 100 years old at this point! This makes for a very exciting and knowledgeable diving experience.
