Caribbean Weather-Turks and Caicos

One of the biggest draws of the Turks and Caicos Islands is the weather. Though there is some slight variability by season, the normal weather is warm and calm year-round. However, if you worry about being too hot or not warm enough, read on to discover the best time of year to find the hottest and coolest days, the best kiteboarding winds or calm seas. The islands have a Leeward-windy side and a less windy coast, so there is an opportunity to enjoy your favorite water sports any time of year regardless of variability. With the year-round pleasant weather in the Turks and Caicos Islands, there really is no bad time to visit.

Air and Water Temperatures

The islands enjoy an average of 350 days of sunny skies. Throughout the year, air temperatures range from 75 degrees Fahrenheit to 95 degrees Fahrenheit with only about a 7-degree difference in high temperatures from the hottest summer day to the coolest winter day. However, the winter tends to be slightly cooler and windier, which may appeal to those who tend to overheat. Luckily, balmy trade winds keep everyone relatively comfortable even on the hottest day.

The water temperature is a lovely 74 to 78 degrees in winter and 82 to 84 degrees in the summer. The turquoise waters have visibility between 80 and 130 feet. Because of this, the area boasts extraordinary diving and snorkeling along all of the islands with shipwrecks and incredible underwater wildlife. Diving is great year-round as the warm water makes for a fabulous summer season, and the excellent visibility associated with the winter’s slightly cooler water makes for incredible dives.

Seasonal Weather Patterns

Besides the temperature, the other aspects of seasonal variability in the Turks and Caicos Islands are subtle. The lack of hard weather does not make this a prime surfing location, but if you want the kind of wind needed for kiteboarding, you should plan a trip to the islands during the wintertime.

With the abundance of wildlife in and around the islands, different seasons give you various opportunities if you are a birder or diver.  Do you want to be there during the whale migration?  Is there a certain migratory bird that you are hoping to see during your time in the islands?  If so, it is best to coordinate with a dive instructor or wildlife guide about the events you would like to encounter before you book a trip. This can help you to maximize your opportunity to see your favorite wildlife.

Facts on Rainfall

The annual rainfall in Turks and Caicos is 33 inches, which happens mostly during two seasons. In the spring, light sprinkles make up the prevailing weather pattern, but the bulk of rain occurs from June to November in single large downpours. The chance that you will see rain is small as the islands only have about fifteen annual rainy days total. Even on the rainy days, sunshine will appear, having only a few hours of weather during an otherwise beautiful day.
