According to a 2015 study from the US Department of Labor, the average American worker takes just 8 days of vacation a year. Compare that with Austria, the country with the most guaranteed time off of 22 paid vacation days and 13 paid holidays per year. Company leaders can also fail to take advantage of their vacation time. A culture of overwork and feelings that the workplace cannot operate without them plague many corporate employees, a sentiment some companies are trying to change.
Nancy Schlichting, CEO of Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System, explains: “I worry about the people who say they can’t take a vacation. Why can’t they? You start to worry that they aren’t leaving work because they have something to protect, as opposed to feeling good about taking time off. The way I look at it: For executives, if they’re doing their job really well, they should be able to take time off.”

Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and author of Lean In, has attributed her success in juggling her roles to utilizing all vacation days at her disposal.
