You never know where life will take you. Rebecca Fisher sure didn’t know but after one special vacation in the Turks and Caicos it all came full circle. She now is the proud author of a beautifully written and designed children’s book named Cake.

Potcakes are one of the most beloved animals in the Turks and Caicos and very readily capture the hearts of visitors passing by from all over the world.

“Strays are endemic across the entire Caribbean and on the Turks & Caicos, they call these dogs “Potcakes,” a name born of an island custom of feeding the poor hounds the caked food at the bottom of a cooking pot. It’s a Caribbean island breed that is a mix of German Shepherd, Labrador and Foxhound Terrier, with a sweet disposition and eyes that just won’t let you look away.” – Forbes Magazine

Back in 2009, when Rebecca first came to Coriander Cottage in Provo she came across an early morning surprise on her doorstep that she simply could not resist.

Four stray potcake dogs had made their way to Rebecca’s vacation home in search of company and food.

Instead of giving them a few crackers or leftovers and then leaving them alone, Rebecca chose to cook them a special egg breakfast every morning.  It was obvious that they’d won her over.  Every morning for 4 days straight, they’d visit and play. It soon became one of the highlights of her entire trip.

Because of their undeniable charm and the dire situation that prompted these hungry potcakes to venture onto her property, it became clear what had to be done.

Potcake Place, a non-profit run by Jane Parker-Rauw dedicated to eliminating the number of stray dogs in Providenciales, was the go-to place to visit to make a positive impact. They take stray potcake dogs and help them with basic necessities like with food and shelter. They also provide spay and neuter procedures to prevent further populating. All of these services are funded solely by donations! After a thorough process of socialization and physical tests, these pups then get paired up for adoption and that parent is very often a visiting patron in Provo.

During a returning trip that same year, Rebecca decided how she could best do her part and give back.  Considering how much unconditional love and affection she’d received from those 4 potcakes during her stay at Coriander Cottage, making a difference in one potcakes life was the least she could do. Rebecca visited Potcake Place and nothing short of love at first sight. As soon as she saw Cake, she knew instantly who the new family member was going to be. Cake had originally been found in an abandoned box with a litter of three puppies at just three weeks old and was brought to Potcake Place for care.

From that point on the rest was history. The impact that Cake had on Rebeccas family was so powerful, she decided to write about it in a children’s book.
