A shipwreck, a jet ski, and an unforgettable adventure lies waiting in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.
How would you like to add a fun adventure to your beach vacation while flying across the sea on a jet ski? We have the perfect outing for a sunny day; a jet ski tour of a wondrous shipwreck off Long Bay Beach.
Abandoned on a shallow reef about 2 miles off the Southeastern shore of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, lies La Famille Express, a victim of the 2004 Hurricane Frances. In the midst of the storm this massive cargo ship broke loose from its mooring and drifted to where it now rests off Long Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. But what is the history of this decaying rusted shipwreck?
La Famille Express was originally Fort Shevchenko, a cargo ship in the Russian Naval fleet. Built in 1952, this vessel witnessed the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 first hand prior to being sold to a local Turks Islander in the 1990s.
Alone and desolate in some of the clearest waters of the Caribbean, this ship is a fun destination for jet skis and boat tours as well as a navigation landmark (or seamark!) for boaters. Though it is not recommended to board the ship due to unsafe conditions, it is fun to jet ski around the boat and snorkel the surrounding reef.
Jet Ski Tours of the shipwreck also include a stop at Dellis Cay, a tiny uninhabited private island with hotels that were abandoned mid-construction in 2008 financial crisis. (You can get a great deal on one of those buildings!) Walking around this island is a bit eerie but an unforgettable experience.
Look at this amazing giant starfish the kids found on Dellis Cay!
