I frequent the island often for work (It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!) and I love to recommend activities and excursions to guests that I have personally enjoyed. One home run activity in my book is the weekly sunset sail with Sun Charters. On this excursion, guests get to experience sailing on the 77 foot trading schooner called the Atabeyra.
The Atabeyra traded for years between Hispaniola and the Turks & Caicos Islands carrying rum, beer, produce, plants and even building materials. The ship has been refit as a charter vessel and now stays close to home in the sheltered waters of Grace Bay and the Caicos Cays of Turks and Caicos Islands. The crew love to teach sailing basics to new sailors!
The Happy Hour Sunset tour is a weekly public excursion that generally runs every Friday. This tour is a Grace Bay downwind sail into the setting sun on a classic sailing yacht (with great music, beer, nibbles and a bottomless mug of rum punch!). The pricing is also incredibly low in my opinion for the Turks Islands: $40/adult and $25/kid (Subject to change, this is what it was when I went in 2016.)
Sun Charters offers many other tours and excursions. They have private tours for snorkeling or for seeing other islands in Turks. They also offer Bioluminescent Bay tours, which are unforgettable! I highly recommend doing that tour, but the sea only lights up under moonless or cloudy night skies. (You want the sky to be as dark as possible.)
