A private spot in paradise is hard to come by these days. And time alone on unspoiled, uninhabited land is almost unheard of. But a few hidden gems do remain. And Big Water Cay is one of them.
Big Water Cay is located off the eastern coast of Providenciales (Provo) Turks & Caicos. The uninhabited cay, or small island, which is accessible only by boat, is the perfect place to spend a night on what will feel like your own private island.
If you’re up for stepping out of your comfort zone to have a truly unique experience, here is some information that will help ensure things go smoothly!
What to pack
It bears repeating that Big Water Cay is an uninhabited island. That means, among other things, that there are no convenience stores here, so you’ll have to bring with you anything you will want/need during your time there. We recommend visiting the IGA supermarket and the Do It Center (both on Leeward Highway) to stock up on supplies before heading out.
Boats do come by frequently during the day and you may even see some other people on the beach, but come sunset, you’ll likely be able to take in one of the most beautiful spots on earth without anyone else in sight.
Here’s a packing list of some of the things I put together in preparation of spending a romantic night on Big Water Cay.
- Fully-charged cell phone with international roaming enabled – In case of emergency. Generally your phone will receive a signal from Provo…
- 2-way VHF radio with brand new batteries – Just in case you can’t get a cell phone signal, channel 16 is the emergency channel.
- Tent, pillow, light blanket. It’s unlikely to get too cool out.
- Flashlight with extra batteries – No street lights here. It will be pitch black at night and that’s just the way you want it – wait until you see the stars!
- Chairs – So you can relax and enjoy the view.
- Camera and tripod – To capture the breathtaking vistas.
- ***Lots of water – It’s critical to stay hydrated.
- Champagne – You can have some fun while hydrating.
- Coffee/tea
- Cups for hot and cold liquids
- Food in a cooler for dinner and breakfast
- Cooking pot/small camping stove, lighter, and butane. ***NOTE: Fires are not permitted on the island.
- Pocket knife
- Rain jacket – Just in case.
- Beach towels – To dry off after a swim.
- Sunscreen – Apply and reapply!
- Bug spray
- First aid kit
- Any medication you are taking
- Swimsuit (optional). You will most likely have the whole place to yourself.
Getting to the Cay
There is no established “boat ride to Big Cay Water Cay,” this is not a tourist destination. There are a variety of boat operators that may take you to the cay upon request. Transport costs range from $500-$1000 round trip depending on where you leave from and who is taking you. TC Villas can provide a list of captains who may be willing to take you out. Depending on who you go with you may leave from Leeward Marina (15 minute ride to the Cay) or Turtle Cove Marina (30 minute ride to the Cay). Ask your captain drop you off by one of the limestone cliffs. This is the perfect place to set up your tent which you should do right away – before the sun goes down. Be sure to arrange a pickup time before bidding your captain adieu!
Take it in
Once your tent is set up, you can focus 100% on taking it all in. Go for a walk along the beach and explore the cay. If you’re lucky, you may see some rays swim up to the water’s edge. Snap some photos that will make all of your friends green with envy. Set up your chairs along the cliffs for a remarkable sunset view. Force yourself to stop and appreciate the immense beauty that surrounds you.
Final tip
If you want to make your trip to Big Water Cay even more spectacular, go during a meteor shower. On a clear night you won’t believe all the stars you see! Meteor showers occur several times during the year and are predictable, so you can check to find out if any are happening during your trip. Here are some more photos of this amazing excursion.
