5 books to read on vacation

Looking for some great books to read during your vacation? Here are 5 great books that are sure to leave a lasting impression. Weather you are looking for spiritual invigoration or a magical thriller, these picks are sure to please! Grab a drink and a nice spot in the sand and enjoy.

  1. The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

This coming of age novel is a universal story told in the loving and simple style of a parable. Santiago follows a dream to far away lands in pursuit of treasure. This novel will leave you ready to pursue your own personal legend. No matter how many times I read The Alchemist, I always feel energized by the beautiful language guiding the reader through a spiritual journey of their own.

2. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

“Someone who thinks death is the scariest thing doesn’t know a thing about life.”

This heart warming tale doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects. Another coming of age novel, 14 year old Lily Owens escapes her abusive father to be welcomed by the Boatwright sisters in a small South Carolina town. Chalk full of touching metaphors, this book tells a story of feminine strength and the power of love over prejudice.

3. Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss, MD

“We are frightfully concerned with our own deaths, sometimes so much so that we forget the real purpose of our lives”

The true story of a prominent psychiatrist, his young patient, and the past-life therapy that changed both their lives. As a traditional psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss was astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel messages from the space between lives, which contained remarkable revelations about Dr. Weiss’ family and his dead son. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career

4.  Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

“Don’t be afraid. There’s the two of us now.”

This novel crosses many genres, including historical fiction, romance, and science fiction. Claire Randall is on holiday in Scotland with her husband following the end of WWII when she accidentally magically time travels back to the 18th century. This book provides many pages of romance and adventure, but some of my favorite parts feature medical, linguistic and political history.  The great news is that once you’ve finished Book One, you still have 7 large novels left!

5. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

“Think of love as a state of grace; not the means to anything but the alpha and omega, an end in itself.”

This unforgettable novel plays with Marquez’s noted style of magical realism and dives deep into the good and ugly of infatuation. Teenage Florentino falls deeply in love with Fermina and vows to love her forever, even after she stops responding to his attempts to woo her. As the characters age and Florentino’s love holds strong, themes of aging, suffering in the name of love, and love manifesting as a plague weave together into this famous tale.
